Green day lead singer Billy Joel armstrong called into the studio this morning to speak with Ryan Seacrest regarding American Idiot, The Tony Awards, and Broadway.
Green Day will be performing at the upcoming 64th Tony Awards, on Sunday, 20h00 on CBS.
Billy tells us about The American Idiot Music Adaptation of the GreenDay album and explains that it came about when Greenday read 'American Idiot' as a Rock Opera. The talented Michael Meyer, who directed 'Spring Awakening' approached Greenday and explained how he wanted to turn it into a stage production, which has furthermore been nominated for several Tony Awards.
Billy describes the opening as "a collage with pop culture going on all these tv screens" and explains how the show encorporates Ryan Seacrest's voice with the infamous phrase: "And this is........" which is related to the very popular show, American Idol.
Billy tells us that Greenday will be performing at the Tony Awards, but have not yet decided on a performing song. The cast of American Idiot will also be performing at the event, as well as a medley of songs will be performed that encorporates all the broadway shows that are currently showing, this season.
When asked about how the band stays so young after all the many years performing and productions, Billy jokes and says "maybe plastic surgery and viagra". Billy explains that the secret to maintaining good, young, and fresh music as well as a healthy lifestyle, is 'balance' and goes on to describe it as having to balance "how much you party and how much you gotta take care of yourself".
When it comes to the band and maintaining success, Billy says they are "always trying to push the envelope and just keep trying to write and becoming better and better as a song writer" and also adds that Greenday reaches their success by progressing slowly and on their own terms and not listening to what record companies tell them regarding what the record company's interpretation is of what they are supposed to be.
The bandmates have been compared to that of 'close brothers' and Billy adds by saying that they may sometimes get irritated with each other, however, "all those personalities and that energy all goes back into Greenday, even though the parts that get on your nerves are actually probably the strongest points of the band".
Billy currently resides in Oakland Calafornia and often makes his way to New York and Orange County, but was currently calling from Munich Germany.
With a busy schedule, and shows running longer than two to three hours, you can catch Greenday performing at the lollapalooza concert in Chicago, and playing in various ampitheatres all over the states, in the month of August.
Greenday describes their concerts and shows as "a non stop marathon" but in the mind of Billy Joel Armstrong "i wouldnt wanna be doing anything else, ill tell you that"
